Map the sun across the area in summer and winter. Notice the direction of weather, where water currently drains and which doors or windows need to remain clear. These observations tell you more than a product brochure can.
Manual or motorised louvres?
Manual systems are direct and simple. Motorised louvres are useful when the roof is large, adjusted frequently or part of a broader lighting and comfort plan. Both still need deliberate drainage and a clear operating strategy.
Think about the edges
Low sun and wind arrive horizontally, so overhead louvres are only one part of comfort. Screens can help with glare and privacy; glass can moderate exposure while retaining views. Enclosures must be compatible with the exact pergola model.
Plan services early
Lighting, motorised roofs, radiant heating and outdoor kitchens all introduce power or other utilities. Coordinating those routes before installation keeps the finished space quieter and avoids unnecessary rework.
